A leading New Jersey Republicans lawmaker is taking a stand against attempts to rewrite the history of Jan. 6 by members of the conservative media.
State Sen. Jon Bramnick (R-21) blasted Fox News and host Tucker Carlson following the first broadcast by Carlson about the events that transpired at the U.S. Capitol after Donald Trump’s Stop the Steal rally on Jan. 6, 2021. Bramnick, the former Assembly Minority Leader, is a moderate whose name has been mentioned as a possible GOP gubernatorial candidate in 2025.
“Fox reports that DENY Jan 6 was a violent riot are absurd,” wrote Bramnick on his Facebook page. “We, as Republicans, will either stand together against this nonsense or the crazy extremists who ignore facts will define or party.”
Bramnick statement came after Carlson on his March 6 broadcast sought to portray the mob of Trump supporters engaging in a largely peaceful gathering and as conservative counterbalance to the Jan. 6 House Select Committee hearings. Carlson said that lawmakers had intentionally overstated the violence and that members of the bipartisan committee established to investigate the attack “lied about what they saw” in the footage.
“The footage does not show an insurrection or a riot in progress,“ Carlson proclaimed on his program. “The protesters were angry. They believed that the election they had just voted in had been unfairly conducted, and they were right….In retrospect, it is clear the 2020 election was a grave betrayal of American democracy. Given the facts that have since emerged about that election, no honest person can deny it.”
Carlson’s report came just weeks after Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) supplied Carlson and his team exclusive access to Capitol surveillance footage from the day of the riot. To counteract attempts to normalize what happened that day, federal officials released the most recent figures of those arrested while law enforcement officials expressed outrage at attempts to minimize the attacks.
More than 999 defendants have been arrested in nearly all 50 states and the District of Columbia, including 326 defendants who have been charged with assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers or employees. Those include approximately 106 individuals who have been charged with using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily injury to an officer, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
A bipartisan Senate report found that at least seven people, including New Jersey native Brian Sicknick and two other officers, had lost their lives in connection with the attack. Additionally, more than 150 officers from the Capitol Police, the Metropolitan Police of Washington, D.C. and other agencies suffered injuries on Jan. 6 in scenes of hand-to-hand combat.
Outrage of Police
Capitol Police chief J. Thomas Manger sent an internal message to his officers condemning Carlson’s false portrayal.
“Last night an opinion program aired commentary that was filled with offensive and misleading conclusions about the Jan. 6 attack,” Manger wrote. “The program conveniently cherry-picked from the calmer moments of our 41,000 hours of video. The commentary fails to provide context about the chaos and violence that happened before or during these less tense moments.”
While House GOP leaders promoted the reports, top Republican senators condemned it. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) were among others dismissive of attempts to cast the actions of a violent mob they described as being “dangerous and disgusting.”
McConnell, Romney Comments
“Clearly the chief of the Capitol Police, in my view, correctly describes what most of us witnessed firsthand on Jan. 6,” said McConnell. “It was a mistake, in my view, for Fox News to depict this in a way that’s completely at variance with what our chief law enforcement official here at the Capitol thinks.”
Romney added that “the American people saw what happened on Jan. 6, they’ve seen the people that got injured, they saw the damage to the building. You can’t hide the truth by selectively picking a few minutes out of tapes and saying this is what went on. It’s so absurd, it’s nonsense.”
But not all Republicans shared the view of McConnell and Romney, especially in the House.
House Republican Views
The House Republican Conference, the party’s main messaging arm, tweeted a link to a portion of the report calling it a “MUST WATCH.” Many GOP faithful have accused the House select committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attack , which had recommended criminal referrals for Trump and his allies, as being one sided and ostracized Republicans—Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger—who served.
“(Carlson) confirmed what I’ve been saying for well over a year,” Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), the No. 3 Republican in the House, said in a tweet. “Nancy Pelosi’s sham, unconstitutional Jan 6th Committee was nothing more than a political witch-hunt designed to punish the radical Far Left’s political opponents.”
Carslon’s Views on Trump
But just days after the Fox News broadcast, a new batch of text message part of Dominion Voting System’s $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News detailed how in real time how prime time hosts did not believe the false claims of a stolen election and were ready to move on from Trump.
Among the most vocal was Carlson himself.
“We are very, very close to being able to ignore Trump most nights,” Carlson wrote to members of his staff on Jan. 4, 2021. “I truly can’t wait.”
When one is producer replied that they wanted nothing more than to move away from Trump, Carlson responded, “I hate him passionately.”
Good for Bramnick but I’m afraid he will suffer Liz Cheney’s fate as the inmates have taken over the asylum.
Looks like his fate will be determined. Funny how cities burned across America all 2020 and 2021 and Dems were completely silent. They called it “peaceful protests”.
Bramnick is a RINO. A wolf in sheep’s clothing. See you later, alligator.
Fox “news” has nothing to do with facts, but purveys truly perverted information and lies to people who lap them up like a coprophagic enjoys a cup of hot diarrhea.
Politicians try to shut up news agencies that report the truth. Remember 1 st amendment?
USA IS BECOMING MIRE LIKE CHINA.
Why are people so afraid of finding out the truth. If Carlson is making it up, it will come to pass, but if he is telling the truth – it should be told. How does Bramnick have any idea of what he is talking about anyway? He has not seen the footage and only a small portion has been aired by congress or Carlson – so he really is talking out of his hat has no clue.
There is no sane interpretation of the events of January 6 that could even remotely be considered an insurrection. Nancy Pelosi in charge of the capital police probably deliberately made sure that they were understaffed and stood down to allow demonstrators into the capital. They had FBI agents and agent provocateur‘s in the crowd hoping that there would be violence so that they could use it as a political tool. The only reason that there was a January 6 committee was to use it to discredit Trump so that he wouldn’t or can’t run again for president
The whole January 6 commission was a Soviet style show trial. It was a feature of a failed totalitarian police state
Anybody who believes for a second that January 6 was an armed insurrection is a brainwashed moron
The UniParty is in panic mode over the Tucker report, and cautions us that we shouldn’t believe our lying eyes (we should believe their self-serving narrative instead). And another report tonight says that McCarthy will be releasing all of the video footage to the public. If true (and I’ll believe it when I see it), the UniParty will be in complete meltdown…
My sentiments entirely. The fact that 700 testimonies as to election fraud have been suppressed, and not even viewed by A.G William Barr before he declared the results “Officially valid” is soviet style, propagandist crap. He sailed safely on the political sea to the safety of forgotten anonymity. We Americans are indeed being brainwashed. If not, why is it that years after the fact , any time challenges to the election results of 2020 are voiced, in any newspaper, they are always preceded by adjectives such as “fraudulent’ or “false”? It may be the opinion of the reporter, or their editor, but when these repetitive issuances come forth, it is akin to always preceding Joe Stalin’s name with “the sociopath”.
But wait, we couldn’t do that because of the left’s tacit association to communist principles. Sorry, bad example.
Shame on you Senator. I specifically watched the TC show because it promised something new and it did. Carlson showed and condemned the destructive rioters but the “shaman”, well, the guy was obvioulsy nuts and should NEVER been in solitary let alone receive a four year term. Seems most of the other folks were just milling around and the cops were sending very mixed messages. Say Senator WHO was this Ray Epps guy. Why are you not demending his arrest?
WELL; WELL NOW; Just looky at the choice words from State Sen. Jon Bramnick, describing those Protestor’s.. Seems like, it’s all his way or’n the Highway, one!! He done already tried, convicted & crucified these Citizens while Protesting!!//
